Do birds have ears? Well, of course they do! They just don't have external ears like those of mammals. There are several birds such as the Eared Grebe, Long-eared Owl and Short-eared Owl pictured here, that have tufts of feathers that look like ears. These feather tufts are used in various ways by the different species. They may be useful as part of a mating display, or as a means to scare off a predator.
I have a bird, it is a dusky headed conure ( she is a baby named Felice.) I always knew birds had ears and I thought they had interal ears. Uhtil, the day I found my bird's ears- my sister found them and showed me=) They are big holes ( as big as the eyes of the bird) under the eye. Birds can also hear more things than humans. Did you know that while humans can hear sounds in as fast as 1/20th of a second. Birds can hear them in 1/200th of a second ( they can hear up to 10 sounds at a time, the minumum.) Isn't that neat?
ReplyDeleteThis might explain why whenever I used to put her by the speakers or stand by them with her on me, she'd panic and scream and hurry up to my shoulder. I feel bad about that but I didn'y know that her ears were under her eye.
