Not All Terns Are White

Black Terns, Chlidonias niger

Almost all terns are white with a black cap on top of the head. Black Terns are the exception. They are... well... black. Actually, a close look reveals they are dark gray with black heads. I saw this pair of Black Terns in a small wetland south of Pierre this afternoon.
