What Color Is Indigo?

Indigo Bunting, Passerina cyanea
indigo, adj., a color that is dark blue to grayish, purple-blue.

Indigo is a color that lies between blue and violet in the color spectrum. The dictionary calls it, "grayish, purple-blue." The Indigo Bunting pictured above would seem to be a good example of the color, indigo. I don't see any purple in it myself.. maybe a little gray. Indigo is a color name we seldom use to describe things in general conversation. I wonder why that is. Maybe we just don't have a good handle on what the color indigo really looks like. It's a good thing we have Indigo Buntings. They may be single-handedly keeping the color indigo in common use.

  1. In Japan, indigo is a deep, dark blue. It is almost dark navy blue. The color indigo is a dye used to make the dark blue color fabric that they use for sashiko which is a stitching that is traditionally done with white thread on the indigo color. Indigo and white colors are often found in their culture. I need to research where the indigo dye is found and where it comes from. I don't see the indigo bunting as being that same color. They are such a bright, intense, almost irridescent blue. MK
